Canelo Alvarez announced he would challenge Gennady Golovkin after overwhelming Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. back on May 6. Many were surprised at his announcement because it seemed like Alvarez was ducking Golovkin. Golovkin has been interested in unifying the middleweight titles for a long time. Alavarez was the only thing standing in his way.

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, revealed that Alvarez has an immediate rematch clause in his contract. However, Golovkin would not be granted a rematch if he loses. It was also revealed that the fight will take place at the full middleweight limit. In layman terms, both fighters will be allowed to pack on extra poundage after the official weigh-in.

GGG vs Canelo is expected to draw in millions of viewers on the night of September 16, 2017. With Floyd Mayweather Jr. retiring, boxing fans are anxious to see two world-class fighters step into the ring. There’s an old saying in boxing, “A high risk fight leads to a higher reward.”
GGG vs Canelo

Shockingly, there is only one loss between these two talented prizefighters. This is extremely rare when you consider the fact that ambitious champions enjoy accepting challenges from top-notch opposition. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Golden Boy Promotions was reluctant to let Alvarez step into the ring with Golovkin several months ago. Golden Boy Promotions has earned a reputation for protecting their fighters from high risk fights.

Gennady Golovkin has sat on the middleweight throne for several years. After decimating the competition for several years at 160, many felt that he would have moved up in weight to face Andre Ward at the super-middleweight division. This would have been a dream come true, but Ward became impatient with Golovkin and moved up to the light-heavyweight division.

Fortunately for Golovkin, he has a new challenge in front of him. Alvarez is one of the best boxer-punchers in the world today. Since losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. several years ago, Alvarez’s skills have improved tremendously. After several title defenses at 154, Alvarez decided to test his skills at the middleweight division.
Canelo vs Golovkin

Gennady Golovkin is one of the most dangerous fighters around today. Golovkin is well-known for putting a tremendous amount of pressure on his opponents. Golovkin enjoys walking his opponents down while throwing crisp and powerful combinations. Will Alvarez be able to withstand Golovkin’s pressure? This is the biggest question being asked by the boxing world.

Alarez is a patient boxer who doesn’t mind getting into heavy exchanges during bouts. He doesn’t have movement like GGG, but he is a talented counterpuncher. He loves slipping to his left and delivering his patented left hook to the liver. Gennady Golovkin must make certain that he doesn’t get caught with Alvarez’s supreme punch. If Golovkin gets caught with a left hook to the liver, there’s a possibility that he could fall to the canvas.

Canelo vs. GGG is a matchmaker’s dream come true. Thousands of proud Mexican fans are expected to be in the T-Mobile Arena on fight night. This may give Canelo the extra confidence he needs. However, Golovkin is an experience professional. It’s hard to believe that he will be influenced by the crowd.

How will Canelo fare against Golovkin’s hand speed and punching power? Will Alvarez be able to counter GGG’s punches and land effective body punches? These questions will be answered on September 18, 2017. Canelo vs. GGG will be a fight boxing fans will remember for a long time.
